Pet Ultrasound & Echocardiograms
Diagnostic Imaging for Dogs and Cats
Abdominal Ultrasounds
An abdominal ultrasound enables veterinarians and veterinary professionals to examine your pet’s internal organs in a safe way. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound is real-time imaging of soft tissues and organ movement, which is used to gather valuable diagnostic information.
Abdominal ultrasounds are used to evaluate issues like:
- Liver conditions
- Kidney and bladder abnormalities
- Gastrointestinal concerns
- Masses or tumors
- Fluid within the abdomen
Pet ultrasound imaging can identify issues that may not be visible on radiographs alone and is often an important next step when pets are experiencing ongoing symptoms.
Veterinary Echocardiograms
An echocardiogram is a specialized ultrasound of the heart used to evaluate cardiac structure and function. A pet echo assesses how the heart is working in real time. Echocardiograms may be recommended for pets with heart murmurs, suspected heart disease, breathing changes, or weakness issues.
For cats or dogs with heart concerns, an echocardiogram helps us evaluate heart size, valve function, blood flow, and overall cardiac performance so we can develop the most appropriate care plan for your pet.
Interpreted by a Board-Certified Specialist
All ultrasound studies and echocardiograms performed at Orange City Family Animal Care are interpreted by a board-certified veterinary specialist. This means your pet’s imaging is reviewed by a professional with expertise in ultrasound imaging for accurate interpretation and high-quality diagnostic insight.
Combining technology with a specialist evaluation allows us to provide a higher level of diagnostic care while keeping your pet close to home.
Diagnostics with Local Convenience
Many imaging services with specialists are only available through referral clinics. At Orange City Family Animal Care, we are proud to offer ultrasounds and echocardiograms for pets right here in our community of Sioux County. Having these diagnostics performed in our clinic reduces travel time and keeps you coordinated with your primary veterinary team.
The Benefits of Ultrasound and Echocardiography
Pet ultrasounds and echos give veterinarians valuable information that cannot always be obtained through physical exams alone. These diagnostics can be used to detect disease earlier with improved diagnostic accuracy. They reduce the need for invasive exploratory procedures, too.
Because ultrasound imaging is non-invasive, it is a safe and well-tolerated diagnostic option for many pets.
Will my pet need sedation for an ultrasound?
In most cases, no. Ultrasounds and echocardiograms can usually be performed while your pet is awake and comfortably resting. Sedation is only needed for especially anxious pets that will not remain still or in specific situations.
How long does an ultrasound or echocardiogram take?
Most imaging appointments for pets take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the study and your pet’s condition. We will tell you if your pet’s appointment is expected to take an especially long time.
Why would my pet’s veterinarian recommend an echo?
An echocardiogram evaluates heart function and is used to diagnose conditions such as valve disease, enlarged heart chambers, fluid buildup, or other forms of heart disease. It is often recommended by a vet when a heart murmur or cardiac symptoms are present.
Will my pet need to be shaved for an ultrasound?
Yes, a small area of fur typically needs to be shaved so we can obtain clear, accurate images. Ultrasound waves do not travel well through hair, so clipping the fur makes for better contact between the probe and your pet’s skin.
